CVE-2018-17456 is a remote code execution vulnerability in Git’s handling of submodule URLs during a recursive clone of a malicious superproject. In affected versions of Git before 2.14.5, 2.15.x before 2.15.3, 2.16.x before 2.16.5, 2.17.x before 2.17.2, 2.18.x before 2.18.1, and 2.19.x before 2.19.1, a crafted .gitmodules file can specify a submodule URL beginning with a '-' character. During processing of a recursive "git clone," this malicious URL can be interpreted as an option rather than a normal repository location, leading to arbitrary command execution on the client performing the clone.
