CVE-2018-25117 is a supply-chain compromise affecting the VestaCP Debian installer. Commits from a3f0fa1 (2018-05-31) through ee03eff (2018-06-13) contained embedded malicious code. Systems newly installed from the compromised installer were exposed during installation to exfiltration of administrative data, specifically a base64-encoded admin password and server domain, to an external URL. The malicious installer could also drop and execute Linux/ChachaDDoS, a multi-stage DDoS bot whose later stages use Lua, under local system privileges. As a result, affected servers were turned into malware-infected hosts immediately at install time. The issue is appropriately classified as embedded malicious code in the software supply chain rather than a conventional memory-corruption or input-validation flaw.
