Integer overflow in V8 object instantiation in Google Chrome

IdentifiersCVE-2018-6065CWE-190· Integer Overflow or Wraparound

CVE-2018-6065 is an integer overflow vulnerability in the V8 JavaScript engine in Google Chrome prior to 65.0.3325.146. The flaw occurs while computing the required allocation size when instantiating a new JavaScript object. A crafted HTML page containing malicious JavaScript can trigger the overflow, leading to an undersized heap allocation and subsequent heap corruption during object creation. The issue is remotely reachable through web content rendered by a vulnerable Chrome/Chromium-based browser instance.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation can cause heap corruption in the browser process and may allow a remote attacker to achieve code execution in the context of the targeted browser process. At minimum, the flaw can result in browser instability or crash; in more advanced exploitation scenarios it can be used as part of a full compromise chain against vulnerable Chrome or Chromium-based applications.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

Until patching is completed, reduce exposure by restricting use of vulnerable Chrome/Chromium versions, especially for untrusted web content. Disable or limit access to embedded Chromium-based webviews where feasible, enforce rapid browser updates, and use application isolation/sandboxing and exploit mitigations provided by the platform. Network- or content-filtering controls may reduce opportunistic delivery, but they do not reliably prevent exploitation of malicious HTML/JavaScript.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Upgrade Google Chrome to version 65.0.3325.146 or later. For Chromium-based products or embedded browsers that incorporate the affected V8 version, apply the corresponding vendor patch or update to a build that includes the fix for CVE-2018-6065. Ensure downstream applications embedding Chromium/V8 also receive the patched engine version.
