A crafted ZIP file can include archive entries with directory traversal sequences such as ../ that are not properly validated during extraction, allowing files to be written outside the intended destination directory. The issue affects Apache Hadoop 3.1.0, 3.0.0-alpha through 3.0.2, 2.9.0 through 2.9.1, 2.8.0 through 2.8.4, 2.0.0-alpha through 2.7.6, and 0.23.0 through 0.23.11. This is part of the broader Zip Slip vulnerability pattern disclosed in 2018 affecting archive extraction implementations that concatenate archive entry names to destination paths without canonicalization and boundary checks.
