CVE-2018-8589 is a local elevation of privilege vulnerability in the Windows kernel-mode graphics component win32k.sys affecting Windows 7, Windows Server 2008, and Windows Server 2008 R2. The flaw is a race condition in win32k!xxxMoveWindow caused by improper locking of messages sent synchronously between threads. Exploitation involves creating two threads with windows that share a window procedure and recursively triggering WM_NCCALCSIZE handling so that termination of the opposite thread at maximum recursion depth causes asynchronous copying of an attacker-controlled lParam structure. The vulnerable interaction between win32k!xxxCalcValidRects and win32k!SfnINOUTNCCALCSIZE allows attacker-controlled data to be copied into kernel context, leading to execution flow redirection and privilege escalation.
