Apache Santuario XML Security for Java contains an unsafe DocumentBuilder caching mechanism introduced in version 2.0.3. The library uses a static pool of DocumentBuilder instances to improve XML-document creation performance. If untrusted code registers a malicious XML parser implementation through the thread context class loader before this pool is initialized, Santuario can cache that implementation and reuse it in later XML-security operations, including signed XML document validation. The issue affects Apache Santuario XML Security for Java 2.0.x from 2.0.3 onward and 2.1.x versions before 2.1.4.
