Directory Traversal in phpTransformer 2016.9 jQueryFileUploadmaster endpoint
CVE-2019-25579 is a directory traversal vulnerability in phpTransformer 2016.9. The flaw affects the jQueryFileUploadmaster server endpoint, where an unauthenticated attacker can manipulate the path parameter with traversal sequences such as ../../../../../../ to escape the intended directory. By supplying crafted path values, an attacker can list and retrieve files from arbitrary locations on the underlying filesystem that should not be exposed by the application.
What it means and what to do now: patch path, interim mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.
What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.
Successful exploitation allows unauthorized read access to arbitrary files accessible to the web application, resulting in a high confidentiality impact. Based on the provided information, the vulnerability enables file listing and file retrieval outside the intended directory boundaries. There is no specific evidence in the provided content of direct integrity or availability impact.
If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.
If immediate patching is not possible, restrict or disable external access to the jQueryFileUploadmaster server endpoint, especially from untrusted networks. Apply web server or WAF rules to block requests containing traversal patterns such as ../ or URL-encoded equivalents in the path parameter. Limit filesystem permissions for the web application account so that only required directories are readable, reducing the impact of arbitrary file access.
Patch, then assume compromise.
Upgrade from phpTransformer 2016.9 to a fixed version if one is available from the vendor. The vulnerable endpoint should be corrected to prevent directory traversal by strictly validating and canonicalizing user-supplied path input, rejecting traversal sequences such as ../, and enforcing access only within an allowlisted base directory. Server-side code should avoid directly concatenating untrusted path input into filesystem operations.
