CVE-2020-1971 is a NULL pointer dereference in OpenSSL's GENERAL_NAME_cmp function when both X.509 GENERAL_NAME inputs are of type EDIPARTYNAME. The vulnerable comparison can occur during comparison of certificate-revocation-list distribution-point names or during timestamp-response signer validation through TS_RESP_verify_response or TS_RESP_verify_token. Although affected releases cannot correctly construct or parse standard EDIPARTYNAME encodings, a malformed encoding accepted by the parser can reach the vulnerable code path. OpenSSL 1.1.1 through 1.1.1h and 1.0.2 through 1.0.2w are affected.

A network-reachable denial-of-service vulnerability in OpenSSL's GENERAL_NAME_cmp function. When two attacker-controlled EDIPARTYNAME values are compared, a NULL pointer dereference can crash applications using the affected API paths.
