CVE-2020-4053 affects Helm versions greater than or equal to 3.0.0 and less than 3.2.4. When installing Helm plugins from a tar archive over HTTP, Helm does not properly neutralize relative path traversal sequences embedded in archive entries. A malicious plugin author can craft a plugin archive containing filenames with relative paths such as ../ so that, during extraction, files are written outside the intended plugin installation directory. This is a classic archive extraction path traversal issue commonly referred to as Zip Slip, despite the archive format being tar.
