CVE-2020-9020 is a critical remote command execution vulnerability affecting Iteris Vantage Velocity Field Unit devices version 2.3.1, 2.4.2, and 3.0. The flaw is caused by improper validation and sanitization of user-supplied input in the CGI component timeconfig.py. Specifically, the NTP Server field, represented by the htmlNtpServer parameter, can be supplied with shell metacharacters that are written into a shell-consumed configuration context. When the downstream ntp configuration script processes this value, attacker-controlled commands are executed by the underlying operating system. The vulnerability is remotely reachable over the device web interface and enables unauthenticated command injection through a crafted HTTP request.
