Privilege Escalation in Ballistix MOD Utility MODAPI.sys Driver

IdentifiersCVE-2021-41285CWE-269

A vulnerability in Ballistix MOD Utility through version 2.0.2.5 exists in the MODAPI.sys driver component, where a specific IOCTL request allows low-privileged users to interact directly with physical memory using the MmMapIoSpace function. This improper access control enables attackers to map arbitrary physical memory into user space, facilitating local privilege escalation to NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM.

ANALYST BRIEF

Impact, mitigation & remediation

What it means. What to do now. Patch path, mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.

Impact

What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.

Successful exploitation allows a local attacker to escalate privileges from a low-privileged user to SYSTEM by mapping and manipulating physical memory, potentially leading to full system compromise.

Mitigation

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.

Restrict access to the vulnerable driver file to trusted users only, and consider disabling or uninstalling the Ballistix MOD Utility until a patched version is available. Employ endpoint protection solutions to detect and block exploitation attempts.

Remediation

Patch, then assume compromise.

Update Ballistix MOD Utility to a version where the MODAPI.sys driver properly restricts IOCTL access and prevents unprivileged users from mapping physical memory. Ensure that only trusted, privileged processes can issue sensitive IOCTLs to the driver.
