CVE-2021-42311 is an SQL injection vulnerability in Microsoft Defender for IoT affecting the update-handshake flow. The flaw is present in the UpdateHandshakeHandlers::is_connected function, which processes input associated with the token update-handshake endpoint. The vulnerable endpoint is reachable without prior authentication if the requester can supply the required update-handshake secret. Reported analysis indicates that this secret was hardcoded in product configuration and shared across installations, materially weakening access control to the endpoint. The vulnerable SQL execution path permits injection into backend database queries, enabling attacker-controlled SQL statements to be executed by the application. Because the issue resides in a network-reachable management interface component, successful exploitation can lead to compromise of application data and facilitate broader takeover of the Defender for IoT appliance.
