CVE-2021-42313 is an unauthenticated SQL injection vulnerability in Microsoft Defender for IoT. The flaw is present in the DynamicTokenAuthenticationBaseHandler class, which inherits from BaseHandler and does not require authentication. Two methods in this class, get_version_from_db and uuid_is_connected, are vulnerable to SQL injection. The vulnerable code path is reachable through token-related and upgrade-related API routes, including sensor synchronization and upgrade status functionality. The SQL execution path supports stacked queries, which materially increases exploitability and post-exploitation options. Reported exploitation scenarios include extracting session data from the application database and using that access to take over accounts. Although Microsoft categorized the issue as a remote code execution vulnerability, the specific technical detail provided identifies the root cause as unauthenticated SQL injection in exposed application endpoints.
