CVE-2021-47393 is a flaw in the Linux kernel hwmon mlxreg-fan driver’s handling of minimum fan-speed enforcement through sysfs. The driver permits special current-state values above the nominal maximum fan-speed state to enforce a minimum fan speed. When thermal statistics are enabled, processing such an out-of-range state through the normal thermal cooling-device statistics update path can index beyond the thermal statistics table, producing a slab out-of-bounds read. The upstream correction returns a non-zero status for sysfs-enforced fan states so that thermal_cooling_device_stats_update() is not invoked for values outside the statistics table range.
