CVE-2022-1852 is a NULL pointer dereference in the Linux kernel KVM x86 instruction-emulation path, affecting x86_emulate_insn in arch/x86/kvm/emulate.c. When an Intel-hosted guest executes an illegal instruction, KVM can process the resulting undefined-instruction exception through emulation. A breakpoint-related return value of zero may be incorrectly treated as EMULATION_OK, allowing x86_emulate_instruction() to proceed before the instruction has been successfully decoded and with stale emulation context. In this path, the permission-check callback can be absent, leaving ctxt->check_perm NULL and causing a kernel fault.
