CVE-2022-34721 is a critical remote code execution vulnerability in Microsoft Windows Internet Key Exchange (IKE) Protocol Extensions. The flaw affects processing associated with IKEv1 in systems where IPsec is enabled. Available reporting indicates the vulnerable code fails to properly validate the length of incoming data before processing a crafted IKE packet, leading to an out-of-bounds read and memory corruption condition in the service hosting the IKE functionality. Microsoft’s fix reportedly added input-length validation and skips processing when the supplied data is too short. Successful exploitation can be performed remotely by sending a specially crafted IP packet to a vulnerable Windows system exposing the affected IPsec/IKE service.
