CVE-2022-40982, known as Downfall or Intel Gather Data Sampling (GDS), is a transient-execution side-channel vulnerability in certain Intel processors' vector execution units. A malicious local process can execute gather instructions to transiently observe stale data associated with vector-register activity from prior execution on the same physical CPU core. The issue exposes microarchitectural state across security boundaries and can disclose sensitive information.
