CVE-2023-0401 is a denial-of-service vulnerability in OpenSSL caused by a NULL pointer dereference during verification of PKCS7 signed or signedAndEnveloped data. When the signature uses a hash algorithm that is recognized by OpenSSL but the corresponding digest implementation is unavailable, digest initialization fails. Due to a missing check of the initialization function's return value, subsequent digest API calls operate on an invalid state and can dereference a NULL pointer, most likely crashing the process. The issue affects PKCS7 processing performed through the S/MIME library and the timestamp library. OpenSSL's TLS implementation does not invoke the affected code paths directly.
