CVE-2023-20569, also known as Inception or Speculative Return Stack Overflow (SRSO), is a speculative execution side-channel vulnerability affecting certain AMD processors, broadly described as Zen 1 through Zen 4. The flaw allows an attacker to influence return address prediction so that a return instruction speculatively executes at an attacker-controlled address. By poisoning return prediction structures, the attacker can induce transient execution along a mispredicted path and then recover data through side-channel observation. The issue is rooted in CPU return address prediction behavior rather than a conventional memory safety bug, and can expose data across privilege boundaries, including kernel memory under suitable conditions.
