Stored XSS in GitLab WebIDE Beta
A stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability exists in GitLab WebIDE beta, affecting versions from 15.9 before 16.0.8, 16.1 before 16.1.3, and 16.2 before 16.2.2. An attacker could craft a malicious URL that, when interacted with by a user, would execute arbitrary JavaScript in the context of the victim's session.
What it means and what to do now: patch path, interim mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.
What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.
Successful exploitation allows an attacker to execute arbitrary JavaScript in the context of another user's session, potentially leading to session hijacking, data theft, or further compromise of the affected user's account.
If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.
Restrict access to the WebIDE beta feature to trusted users only until the patch can be applied. Educate users to avoid interacting with suspicious or unexpected URLs. Consider disabling the WebIDE beta if immediate upgrade is not possible.
Patch, then assume compromise.
Upgrade GitLab to version 16.0.8, 16.1.3, 16.2.2 or later, which contain the fix for this vulnerability.
