CVE-2023-2868 is a remote command injection vulnerability in Barracuda Networks Email Security Gateway (ESG) appliances, affecting appliance form factor versions 5.1.3.001 through 9.2.0.006. The flaw is caused by incomplete sanitization and input validation during processing of user-supplied .tar archives in the ESG attachment-scanning component. Specifically, filenames contained within a crafted .tar file are not comprehensively sanitized before being handled in a code path that invokes Perl's qx operator, allowing specially formatted archive member names to be interpreted as system commands. A remote attacker can exploit this by sending a malicious email attachment containing a crafted .tar archive, resulting in command execution on the ESG appliance.
