CVE-2023-31096 is a local elevation-of-privilege vulnerability in the Broadcom LSI PCI-SV92EX Soft Modem kernel driver through version 2.2.100.1, associated with the Agere soft modem driver lineage. The flaw is a stack overflow in the driver's handling of an IOCTL request, specifically involving RTLCopyMemory for IOCTL 0x1b2150. A local attacker can trigger the vulnerable code path from a medium-integrity process and achieve execution in kernel context, resulting in escalation to SYSTEM. Because the vulnerable component is a signed kernel driver present on supported Windows systems, the issue is also relevant to bring-your-own-vulnerable-driver abuse scenarios.
