CVE-2023-3533 is a path traversal vulnerability in the file upload functionality of Chamilo LMS in /main/webservices/additional_webservices.php, affecting versions up to and including 1.11.20. The flaw is in the wsConvertPpt function, where the user-controlled file_name parameter is insufficiently sanitized before being used to build a filesystem path. The applied sanitization removes some shell metacharacters but does not prevent relative path traversal sequences such as ../, and the resulting attacker-controlled path is ultimately written with file_put_contents. This allows an unauthenticated attacker to escape the intended directory and perform arbitrary file write. According to the provided content, the arbitrary write can be leveraged to place malicious HTML in web-accessible writable directories for stored XSS, or to overwrite PHP session files with attacker-controlled serialized data to achieve remote code execution when a page invoking session_start() is later accessed.
