CVE-2023-38346 is a directory traversal vulnerability in the tarExtract function of Wind River VxWorks 6.9 and 7, and is reported to affect at least VxWorks 21.07 with likely impact to older releases before September 2023. The flaw arises because tarExtract processes TAR archive entries containing absolute paths or relative traversal sequences instead of safely rejecting or sanitizing them by default. As a result, when application code extracts an untrusted TAR archive, archive members can be written outside the intended extraction directory. This behavior is unexpected for developers who assume extraction will constrain output to the target path, and it can also undermine workflows that unpack archives before validating their contents.
