CVE-2023-39810 is a directory traversal vulnerability in the cpio extraction functionality of BusyBox, reproduced in BusyBox v1.33.2 and also observed in earlier versions such as v1.30.1. During archive extraction, BusyBox cpio accepts archive member names containing absolute paths or relative traversal sequences such as ../ and does not reliably confine extracted files to the intended destination directory. As a result, a crafted cpio archive can cause files to be written outside the working or extraction directory. Later discussion of the upstream fix indicates the issue is addressed by sanitizing destination paths to strip unsafe prefixes and traversal components, but that protection is tied to the FEATURE_PATH_TRAVERSAL_PROTECTION build option.
