CVE-2023-40238 is a LogoFAIL vulnerability in the BMP image parser used by the BmpDecoderDxe DXE driver in Insyde InsydeH2O firmware on certain Lenovo devices. The flaw affects InsydeH2O kernel 5.2 before 05.28.47, 5.3 before 05.37.47, 5.4 before 05.45.47, 5.5 before 05.53.47, and 5.6 before 05.60.47. The issue occurs during parsing of crafted BMP logo files in the DXE phase of UEFI execution, specifically in RLE4/RLE8-compressed BMP handling. An integer signedness error involving PixelHeight and PixelWidth causes incorrect pointer arithmetic when computing the destination pixel buffer location. In the reported RLE8 case, attacker-controlled header values such as PixelHeight equal to 0 can cause the write pointer to underflow below the intended output buffer, after which subsequent decode operations perform attacker-influenced writes to memory at a controllable address. This creates an out-of-bounds write condition during pre-OS firmware execution and can be leveraged for arbitrary code execution in the DXE environment.
