CVE-2023-40547 is a remote code execution vulnerability in Shim affecting the HTTP boot support path. The flaw arises because Shim trusts attacker-controlled values while parsing an HTTP response during early boot. By supplying a specially crafted malicious HTTP response, an attacker can trigger a fully controlled out-of-bounds write condition. Because the memory corruption primitive is attacker-controlled, successful exploitation can result in arbitrary code execution and full system compromise in the pre-OS boot environment. The issue is relevant to Secure Boot trust chains because compromise at this stage can enable execution of malicious code before the operating system is fully loaded.
