CVE-2023-42916 is an out-of-bounds read vulnerability in Apple WebKit, the browser engine used by Safari and by web content processing on iOS and iPadOS. The flaw was addressed through improved input validation. Processing maliciously crafted web content can trigger the out-of-bounds read condition and disclose sensitive information from memory. Apple stated that it was aware of reports indicating the issue may have been exploited in the wild against versions of iOS prior to iOS 16.7.1. Fixes were released for iOS 17.1.2 and iPadOS 17.1.2, macOS Sonoma 14.1.2, and Safari 17.1.2, with later backported fixes also made available for older supported iPhone and iPad releases.
