CVE-2023-48219 is a mutation cross-site scripting vulnerability in TinyMCE affecting core undo/redo functionality as well as certain APIs and plugins that serialize and re-parse editor content. The flaw arises because text nodes under specific parent elements are not escaped during serialization in accordance with the HTML standard. If an attacker can introduce text containing a special internal marker character and combine it with suitable HTML patterns, the resulting content can survive TinyMCE’s initial sanitization when parsed into the editor body. Later, when TinyMCE removes the internal marker and re-parses the serialized content, the mutated markup can become active script-bearing HTML and trigger cross-site scripting in the victim’s browser.
