CVE-2023-52528 is an uninitialized-value access in the Linux kernel's smsc75xx USB Ethernet driver. The __smsc75xx_read_reg function can proceed with a register buffer that was not fully initialized when the underlying USB read operation returns fewer bytes than requested. The uninitialized buffer is subsequently consumed during device readiness handling while binding the USB network device. The upstream fix rejects short reads by returning an error rather than using incomplete data.
