CVE-2023-52648 is a flaw in the Linux kernel DRM VMware graphics driver (vmwgfx), introduced in Linux kernel 5.19. During a plane-state transition, vmwgfx can unreference a cached surface without clearing the associated mapped-state flag. A subsequently duplicated plane state may therefore report that a surface is mapped even though no surface is present, including when the plane is instead backed by a buffer object. Cleanup code can dereference the absent surface, causing a null-pointer dereference in the cursor plane cleanup path.
