CVE-2023-53552 is a use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel Intel i915 DRM driver’s handling of GuC virtual-engine requests. Userspace may retain i915 request references through synchronization fences or DMA-BUF reservation objects after request completion, including across processes. Fence-release processing subsequently needs to distinguish requests associated with physical hardware engines from virtual-engine requests, but an engine reference may no longer be valid. The fix records virtual-engine status in an additional request execution-mask bit, allowing release handling to identify virtual requests without dereferencing an invalid engine pointer.
