CVE-2023-6918 is an unchecked-return-value flaw in libssh's abstraction layer for message-digest operations provided by supported cryptographic backends. Under low-memory conditions, libssh can fail to handle backend operation failures correctly, resulting in NULL-pointer dereferences, crashes, or use of uninitialized memory as input to the Key Derivation Function. When keys do not match, the resulting cryptographic operation fails integrity or decryption checks and terminates the connection.
