CVE-2024-0450 is a decompression-amplification vulnerability in CPython's zipfile module. Specially crafted "quoted-overlap" ZIP archives bypass existing overlap detection, allowing a small archive to expand into disproportionately large amounts of data when read or extracted, including through ZipFile.extractall(). A demonstrated 116 KB archive expanded to approximately 17 GB. Affected release lines include Python 3.12 through 3.12.1, 3.11 through 3.11.7, 3.10 through 3.10.13, 3.9 through 3.9.18, and 3.8 through 3.8.18; older distribution packages are also affected. The fix rejects entries that overlap another entry or the central directory by raising BadZipFile.

A denial-of-service vulnerability in CPython's zipfile module allows specially crafted ZIP archives with overlapping entries and high compression ratios to exhaust resources. The advisory identifies affected releases as Python 3.12.1, 3.11.7, 3.10.13, 3.9.18, 3.8.18 and prior. This notice concerns the python3.11 package on Unity Linux 20 and assigns a medium CVSS v3 score of 6.2. Nessus detects exposure using the application's reported version rather than testing exploitation.
