CVE-2024-12086 is an information disclosure vulnerability in rsync affecting versions through 3.3.0. The flaw occurs during client-to-server transfer operations, where the rsync server sends checksum data to the client so the client can determine which file data must be transmitted. A malicious server can provide specially crafted checksum values associated with arbitrary files, allowing it to infer and reconstruct the contents of client-side files byte by byte from the client’s responses. The issue enables a server participating in an rsync session to enumerate and recover data from arbitrary files on the client machine, resulting in unintended disclosure of client-resident information.
