CVE-2024-12649 is a buffer overflow vulnerability in XPS data font processing on multiple Canon Small Office Multifunction Printers and Laser Printers running affected firmware versions (v05.04 and earlier on the listed models). The flaw is triggered when the device processes a crafted XPS document containing a malicious embedded TrueType font. According to the provided analysis, the exploit abuses insecure handling of TrueType font hinting instructions by the printer’s font-processing virtual machine, specifically insufficient stack-boundary checking in stack-management operations. This can cause a stack buffer overflow during font interpretation, allowing attacker-controlled data to overwrite memory and ultimately achieve code execution on the printer’s processor. The vulnerable second-stage execution occurs on Canon’s DryOS-based platform.
