CVE-2024-12905 is a path traversal and improper link-resolution vulnerability in the Node.js tar-fs package. When a vulnerable version extracts a maliciously crafted tar archive, archive paths or links can cause file operations outside the designated extraction directory. Affected releases are versions before 1.16.4 in the 1.x line, before 2.1.2 in the 2.x line, and before 3.0.8 in the 3.x line.

This repository contains a proof-of-concept exploit for CVE-2024-12905, a file write/overwrite vulnerability in the tar-fs (version 3.0.0) package. The exploit is implemented in Python (exploit.py) and demonstrates how an attacker can generate two tar archives: the first containing a symlink to a target file (such as ~/.ssh/authorized_keys), and the second containing the attacker's file contents. When these archives are extracted in sequence by a vulnerable tar-fs instance, the symlink is followed and the target file is overwritten with attacker-controlled data. The exploit requires the attacker to specify both the file to use as content and the target file path to overwrite. The README.md provides a brief description of the vulnerability. The exploit demonstrates a local attack vector, as it requires the attacker to upload crafted tar files to a system running the vulnerable tar-fs extraction process.
