CVE-2024-20401 is an arbitrary file-overwrite vulnerability in the content scanning and message filtering functionality of Cisco Secure Email Gateway. Improper handling of crafted email attachments permits an unauthenticated remote attacker to cause an affected appliance to overwrite arbitrary files on its underlying operating system by sending a malicious attachment through the gateway. The issue affects vulnerable Cisco AsyncOS deployments when file analysis or content-filtering functionality is enabled under the affected conditions.

A critical file-handling flaw in Cisco Secure Email Gateway that allows a remote unauthenticated attacker to send specially crafted email attachments to modify arbitrary files, potentially leading to code execution, root-level user creation, unauthorized system changes, or denial of service under specific configuration conditions.
A critical Cisco Secure Email Gateway vulnerability (CVSS 9.8) that lets an unauthenticated attacker send a specially crafted email attachment to create root users, alter appliance configuration, execute arbitrary code, or cause persistent denial of service.
Critical arbitrary file write vulnerability in Cisco Secure Email Gateway (AsyncOS) exploitable via crafted email attachments, enabling file replacement on the underlying filesystem and leading to root user creation, configuration modification, arbitrary code execution, or permanent DoS.
