CVE-2024-26939 is a use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel Intel DRM i915 driver's VMA management. A race can occur between VMA destruction/parking and asynchronous VMA retirement: the VMA active count can reach zero while __active_retire() continues to deactivate and retire the VMA, allowing concurrent i915_vma_destroy() processing to free an object that retirement code may still use. The upstream fix holds an untracked GT wakeref while a non-global-GTT VMA is active and releases it asynchronously only after deactivation, preventing GT parking and VMA finalization before retirement completes.
