CVE-2024-26958 is a use-after-free flaw in the Linux kernel NFS client's direct-write path. During asynchronous submission and completion of NFS commit requests, a commit request can complete before subsequent requests are submitted. The completion handling can then invoke direct-write completion on the same nfs_direct_request twice, causing reference-count underflow and use-after-free. The correction applies the established commit begin/end completion-accounting pattern around commit-request processing so completion occurs only after the relevant asynchronous commit work is accounted for.
