CVE-2024-27459 is a stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability in the OpenVPN interactive service on Windows, affecting OpenVPN 2.6.9 and earlier. The flaw is caused by improper implementation of message size handling during communication between openvpn.exe and openvpnserv.exe. By sending crafted data that triggers incorrect message length processing, an attacker can cause a stack overflow in the service context. The vulnerability can be used for denial of service and, because the affected service runs with higher privileges than the user-level process, may also be leveraged for local privilege escalation. Reporting around the broader OpenVPN vulnerability set indicates this issue can also be chained with other OpenVPN flaws to contribute to remote code execution scenarios.
