CVE-2024-3393 is a high-severity denial-of-service vulnerability in the DNS Security feature of Palo Alto Networks PAN-OS. An unauthenticated remote attacker can trigger the flaw by sending specially crafted DNS packets through the firewall data plane. On affected systems, malformed DNS traffic processed while DNS Security logging is enabled can cause a data plane failure that forces the firewall to reboot; repeated triggering can drive the device into maintenance mode. The issue affects PAN-OS deployments using vulnerable 10.1, 10.2, 11.1, and 11.2 releases, as well as affected Prisma Access deployments, when DNS Security or Advanced DNS Security licensing is enabled and DNS Security logging is active. The weakness has been associated with improper handling of unusual or exceptional conditions during DNS packet processing and logging.
