CVE-2024-35810 is an incorrect lifetime-management vulnerability in the Linux kernel DRM VMware graphics driver (drm/vmwgfx). During an atomic display update, cleanup of cursor buffer-object memory can be dispatched before the update completes. The vmw_plane_state handling attempted to manage mapped buffer-object lifetime independently rather than using the driver's map-and-cache mechanism, allowing memory still used by an active atomic update to be invalidated. This can cause kernel oopses, including during cursor-related graphics workloads. The upstream fix changes vmw_plane_state buffer-object handling to use map_and_cache so mapped memory remains valid for the required lifetime.
