CVE-2024-35973 is an uninitialized-memory vulnerability in the Linux kernel Geneve tunneling transmit path, affecting geneve_xmit_skb() and geneve_xmit(). Inadequate VLAN-aware header validation permits a VLAN tag supplied through AF_PACKET to cause the network header to reference an incorrect location. Where the skb protocol is not IPv4 or IPv6, pskb_inet_may_pull() performs no validation, and the skb linear region may be shorter than expected. Subsequent Geneve processing can use uninitialized data. The fix adds skb_vlan_inet_prepare() to perform complete MAC and VLAN-aware validation before Geneve packet processing.

A medium-severity Linux kernel Geneve tunneling flaw caused by insufficient packet/VLAN header validation. A locally privileged attacker able to send crafted packets through AF_PACKET could trigger use of uninitialized memory in the Geneve transmit path, resulting in a denial of service.
