CVE-2024-36017 is an out-of-bounds read vulnerability in the Linux kernel rtnetlink handling of nested IFLA_VF_VLAN_LIST attributes. The do_setvfinfo path validated each nested attribute only against the netlink attribute header length (4 bytes), then cast the attribute payload to struct ifla_vf_vlan_info, which requires at least 14 bytes. A crafted undersized nested attribute could therefore be saved and later dereferenced as a full ifla_vf_vlan_info structure, causing an out-of-bounds read.
