CVE-2024-36072 is a critical unauthenticated remote code execution vulnerability affecting Netwrix CoSoSys Endpoint Protector through 5.9.3 and CoSoSys Unify through 7.0.6. The flaw is reachable through the server-side logging workflow and can be exploited by chaining multiple weaknesses in the application. An attacker can first abuse the SOAP registration functionality to obtain credentials or certificate material sufficient to satisfy the product’s certificate-based authentication checks, then exploit insufficient validation in the log upload handling to perform path traversal and create attacker-controlled files on the server. The vulnerability chain reaches a privileged worker process that manages log files and invokes shell commands on file paths derived from those logs. Because those file paths are not safely sanitized before being passed to shell execution, an attacker can inject shell metacharacters and cause arbitrary system commands to be executed. The vulnerable execution path runs in a root-privileged context, resulting in full server compromise.
