CVE-2024-36489 is a race condition in the Linux kernel TLS subsystem caused by a missing write memory barrier during TLS context initialization. tls_init initializes the TLS context's saved protocol pointer from the socket protocol and then updates the socket's protocol pointer to the TLS protocol handlers. Without release ordering, the publication of the TLS protocol handlers can become visible before initialization of the context protocol pointer. A concurrent setsockopt or getsockopt operation can then invoke the TLS handler and dereference the still-NULL context protocol pointer. The fix publishes the socket protocol pointer with rcu_assign_pointer() only after the context protocol pointer has been initialized, providing release-barrier semantics.
