CVE-2024-37085 is an authentication bypass vulnerability in VMware ESXi hosts configured to use Active Directory for user management. ESXi automatically grants administrative privileges to members of a designated domain group, identifying that group by name rather than security identifier. An attacker with sufficient Active Directory group-management permissions can create or rename a group to the privileged name and obtain full administrative access through an attacker-controlled member account. The original vendor description specifies re-creating a configured group after deletion, whereas Microsoft describes exploitation through creation of a previously nonexistent group. The default group name is inconsistently identified as "ESXi Admins" and "ESX Admins." Successful exploitation enables hypervisor takeover and has been used in ransomware attacks.
