CVE-2024-38213 is a Windows Mark of the Web (MotW) security feature bypass vulnerability affecting the trust-marking and downstream protection flow used by Windows and SmartScreen. The flaw allows a file originating from a WebDAV share to be copied to the local system without receiving the expected Mark of the Web metadata, causing Windows security controls to treat the file as if it did not originate from an untrusted zone. Public reporting describes the issue as enabling bypass of SmartScreen protections and refers to the technique as “copy2pwn.” Microsoft reported the vulnerability as exploited in the wild.
