HTML Injection XSS in Apache Syncope Console and Enduser
CVE-2024-38503 is a cross-site scripting vulnerability in Apache Syncope affecting the Console and Enduser interfaces. When editing a user, group, or other object in the Syncope Console, HTML tags could be inserted into text fields. The same issue also affected the Syncope Enduser interface when editing Personal Information or User Requests. The flaw stems from improper validation or sanitization of user-supplied input before it is stored or rendered, allowing attacker-controlled HTML content to be introduced into application data and potentially executed in a victim's browser when viewed through the affected interfaces. Affected versions include the 3.0 branch through 3.0.7 and the 2.1 branch through 2.1.14.
What it means and what to do now: patch path, interim mitigations, and the assume-compromise checklist.
What an attacker gets, and what they’ve been doing with it.
Successful exploitation can enable client-side attacks against users of the affected Syncope interfaces, including stored cross-site scripting. An attacker able to submit crafted HTML content into editable fields may cause malicious script or active content to execute in another user's browser when the tainted data is rendered. Depending on the victim's privileges and browser context, this can lead to session compromise, unauthorized actions performed in the victim's context, interface defacement, or exposure of sensitive data accessible through the application.
If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.
If immediate upgrading is not possible, restrict access to the Syncope Console and Enduser interfaces to trusted users and administrative networks only. Apply compensating controls at a reverse proxy or web application firewall to block or sanitize suspicious HTML input submitted through editable text fields. Review and audit recently modified user, group, object, Personal Information, and User Request fields for injected markup, and monitor application activity for attempts to submit HTML or script content.
Patch, then assume compromise.
Upgrade Apache Syncope to version 3.0.8 or later, which fixes this vulnerability. For deployments on affected older branches, move to a patched release in the supported line and validate that all Console and Enduser components are updated together so the corrected input handling is consistently applied.
